- Oct 1, 1985: New York Times reports that "up to one million Americans"
- are infected with the AIDS virus, and the total may be climbing up but
- to 1,000-2,000 per day.

- Apr 6, 1986: The Times reports that an "estimated one million people
- in the United States" are infected with the AIDS virus.

- Aug 27, 1989: The 100,000th case of AIDS is reported. HHS Secretary
- Louis Sullivan writes in the Los Angeles Times that "more than one
- million Americans have already been infected."

- June 25, 1990: Comparing the spread of AIDS in inner cities to that of
- Africa, Newseek notes that "an estimated 1 million Americans are
- infected with the virus."

- June 28, 1992: The CDC offers grim predictions of the AIDS rate, and
- the Times reports it, adding, "the CDC estimates, very roughly, that
- one million Americans are infected."

- At press time, a CDC spokesperson told Spy that the number of
- Americans infected with AIDS had reached a staggering one million.
